What is otoplasty or ear surgery?
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to improve the shape of the ears. It primarily repositions the ears, creating a more uniform appearance with the rest of the face. It should only be indicated for patients with a significant disproportionate shape. Minor defects are best left untreated.
The ears and nose are areas of particular aesthetic sensitivity, and curiously, defects are more noticeable to patients than to those around them. Therefore, it is essential to start with realistic expectations and avoid preconceived notions of the outcome. The goal of surgery is to restore a normal appearance to the ears and ensure they remain invisible to others.
This technique can usually be performed on children from approximately 10 to 14 years of age, as having "protruding ears" can lead to serious psychological problems stemming from personal relationships during childhood and adolescence. Although the most dramatic cases are usually operated on during childhood, many adults seek our consultation.
It should be emphasized that protruding ears are not a pathology, but rather a normal variant. It is quite common; around 5-10% of the population have an abnormality in the shape of the auricles. However, many patients experience insecurity, and in extreme cases, it can be considered a handicap in social interaction.
